How Often Should You Really Get a Manicure or Pedicure?

A lot of people come into La Dolce Nail Spa asking the same question, and there's no single right answer. How often you should get a manicure or pedicure depends on what kind of nails you want to maintain, what your lifestyle looks like, and honestly, what you can realistically fit into your schedule and budget. Some customers come in every two weeks like clockwork. Others come once a month or even less often. The key is understanding what each option actually means for your nails and your routine.

Natural Nails Need Maintenance Too

If you're keeping your nails natural but getting regular manicures, plan on coming in every three to four weeks. Natural nails grow about a quarter inch per month, so that's roughly when the cuticle line starts to look overgrown and your polish starts chipping noticeably. The manicure itself, when we shape, file, and polish your nails, usually holds up pretty well for two weeks. After that, you'll see the polish wear thin at the tips and edges, especially if you're doing dishes, yard work, or anything that puts your hands to work. Some people stretch it to four weeks, but by then the regrowth becomes pretty obvious. If you get a regular manicure every three weeks, your hands stay looking polished and put-together without too much effort on your part between visits.

Gel Polish Lasts Much Longer

This is where people often get confused about the math. Gel polish doesn't chip the way regular polish does. It hardens under the UV light and stays glossy and intact for three to four weeks, sometimes even a bit longer if you're gentle with your hands. That longer wear time is exactly why gel manicures are so popular in Spring and everywhere else. You apply it once and it stays perfect looking through several weeks of regular life. The tradeoff is that gel needs to be properly removed, which means soaking and careful work to avoid damaging the nail bed. If you remove it carelessly or pick at it, you can thin out your nails. That's why we recommend coming in for a removal and fresh gel application rather than trying to do it at home. Most people with gel nails come in every four weeks, sometimes stretching to five if the color still looks good.

Pedicures Have a Different Timeline

Your feet are different from your hands, and pedicure timing reflects that. Toenails grow slower than fingernails, and the polish tends to last longer because your feet take less daily wear and tear than your hands do. A solid pedicure usually looks good for four to five weeks. The color holds up, and if you're keeping up with basic foot care at home, your nails stay neat and clean looking. That said, if you're in and out of sandals all summer here in Spring, or if you're walking around a lot, you might notice the polish wearing at the edges sooner. Many customers do a pedicure every four weeks right along with their manicure appointments, just for convenience. Others space pedicures out to five or six weeks since they don't show wear as quickly. If you're getting gel pedicures, you can usually go the full four to five weeks without any visible chipping or fading.

Your Lifestyle Matters More Than You'd Think

Someone who works in an office and types at a computer most of the day will get more mileage out of a manicure than someone who works with their hands constantly. If you're gardening, cleaning, working construction, or doing anything that involves water and friction, your polish won't last as long. That's just reality. We've had customers who thought they were rough on their nails realize that once they started protecting them a bit more, the polish held up much better. Wearing gloves when you wash dishes or clean makes a real difference. If you're active in sports or spend a lot of time in chlorine, same thing. Those factors might push you to come in every two to three weeks instead of four. It's worth paying attention to how your nails actually hold up after your first appointment with us.

Finding Your Sweet Spot

The honest answer is that most people do best with a regular appointment every three to four weeks, whether that's a manicure, pedicure, or both. That rhythm keeps your nails looking intentional and well-maintained without feeling like you're living at the salon. Some people prefer every two weeks because they like the constant fresh look and they have the budget for it. Others are perfectly happy going five or six weeks and accepting a little more wear toward the end. There's no wrong choice. What matters is picking a schedule that works for you and sticking with it. Your nails will look better, and your skin and cuticles will thank you for the regular care.
